BREAKING OF THE GLASS
BREAKING OF THE GLASS
The breaking of glass at the end of a wedding ceremony serves to remind everyone of two very important aspects of a marriage. First, Bride and Groom - and everyone - should consider these marriage vows an irrevocable act - just as permanent and final as the breaking of glass.
And second, glass is broken to protect this marriage with the implied prayer: ”May your bond of love be as difficult to break as it would be to put together the pieces of this glass.”
After Groom breaks the glass, I invite everyone to shout the Hebrew words “Mazel Tov,” meaning “Good Luck” and “Congratulations.”
Declaration:
Bride and Groom have made their vows to each other, have confirmed their promises by joining hands and exchanging rings. Therefore, by the authority given to me by this Province, I pronounce that they are now husband and wife.
The Best Man places glass by Groom’s foot… Groom breaks glass and kisses Bride… then the guests shout “Mazel Tov”.

Drinking from the Glass prior to the Breaking of the Glass:
Today the two of you will share a glass of wine, to honour both of your heritages.
In the culture of the Jewish people, wine is the symbol of happiness. Take this glass and drink the wine as an affirmation of your hope for the future, a future that welcomes your dreams and makes them real.
This cup of wine is symbolic of the cup of life. As you share this cup of wine, you promise to share all that the future may bring. As you drink from this cup, so may you draw contentment, comfort and happiness from your own cup of life. May you find life's joys heightened, its bitterness sweetened, and all things hallowed by true respect, companionship and love.
